Seeing Your Chinese Zodiac Animal Everywhere: The Frequency Illusion, the Man Who Named It, and the Part That Isn't an Illusion at All

You keep seeing your zodiac animal. There's a name for that, coined in 2005 by a linguist who was mid-argument about grammar, and it explains most of it.

Somebody ruins a font for you at a party and you never get it back.

Say it's Cooper Black. You couldn't have named it, you couldn't have drawn it, and you had been looking directly at it since roughly the age of four. Then a person standing near the chips points at the bottle of hot sauce on the counter and tells you what it's called, and tells you it's the lettering on the cover of Pet Sounds, and tells you the ice cream companies are obsessed with it, and then says the thing that does the damage, which is: you'll start seeing it now.

You start seeing it.

The deli awning two blocks from your apartment, which has been there through three of your jobs. A moving truck. The sign for a haunted hayride on a road you take to visit somebody you like less than you say you do. A guitar shop. The word GARLIC on a jar. A birthday banner at a party for a five-year-old, where you are the only person present who is thinking about typography and also the only person present who did not bring a gift.

By Thursday you're doing it at a funeral. On the program.

Gulp.

Which I want to defend you on, actually, because nobody chose that font under happy circumstances either, and a person has to look somewhere.

None of those signs went up last Tuesday.

That's the part that gets you. The deli awning is sun-bleached to the color of weak tea. The guitar shop has been there longer than the guitar shop's owner has been alive, probably, and I'd like to stress that you have walked past it something like nine hundred times with your entire face pointed at it. The awning didn't change. Your eyes didn't change. What changed is that a stranger holding a beer gave your brain a thing to look for, and your brain, which is a fantastically obedient piece of equipment with no capacity whatsoever to say no to a request like that, went ahead and did it, permanently, for free, without checking with you.

So.

Now do it with a tiger.

Somebody at dinner tells you that you were born in a Tiger year, or you look it up because a coworker was looking hers up, or the calendar at the dentist's office has one on it. And by the following weekend there's a tiger on a tote bag, a tiger in the background of a show you weren't really watching, a tiger on a can of something at the store, a friend using the word as a joke about her toddler, and a tiger on a mural you have driven under twice a day since 2019.

Seven of them. Maybe nine, if the toddler joke counts, and it does. Enough that you get out your phone at eleven at night and type the question in, which is a completely sane thing for a person to do, and which is how you ended up here.

The linguist who named it was in the middle of a grammar argument

The term is frequency illusion, and it was coined by Arnold Zwicky, a linguist at Stanford, in a post on Language Log dated August 7, 2005.

He wasn't writing about perception.

The post is a fight about the phrase between you and I. A real fight. In public.

A language columnist had claimed the construction was a recent bit of sloppiness, and Zwicky's post is a systematic demonstration that it isn't, that it runs back at least 150 years and arguably closer to 400, and that people who make claims like that are making a specific and diagnosable error. Two of them, in fact. He named both in the same post. The recency illusion is believing that something you noticed recently must have started recently. The frequency illusion is the other one, and here is his own sentence for it: "once you've noticed a phenomenon, you think it happens a whole lot, even 'all the time'. Your estimates of frequency are likely to be skewed by your noticing nearly every occurrence that comes past you."

He was cross. Properly cross, in the manner of a specialist watching a generalist be wrong in public. Near the end he says that the people who fall into these illusions are "just too lazy to look it up in reference works" or "to look at the facts," which isn't the voice of a man gently explaining cognition to a general audience. He built out a whole family of these afterward, including an antiquity illusion and an adolescent illusion, and they were all about the same thing: amateurs making confident claims about how language is changing.

Which matters, because the version of Zwicky you'll find repeated everywhere has him inventing a general law of human perception, usually attached to a story about buying a red car and then seeing red cars everywhere. That's a later retrofit by the popular press, and it's a perfectly good example that belongs to whoever wrote it rather than to him. A general theory of noticing wasn't what he was proposing. He was diagnosing bad usage punditry, and the concept turned out to be so portable that it walked off and got a job somewhere else.

It's in the Oxford English Dictionary now, added in March 2019, defined as "a quirk of perception whereby a phenomenon to which one is newly alert suddenly seems ubiquitous." Which is a lovely piece of writing and also considerably calmer than the man who came up with it.

The nickname comes from a newspaper column, and the original rule was much stranger

You'll also see this called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, which is a genuinely peculiar name for something so ordinary, since the Baader-Meinhof gang were West German terrorists and have nothing to do with anything.

The name comes from a reader-submission column called Bulletin Board in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, in Minnesota, in 1994. A reader named Terry Mullen sent it in under the pen name "Gigetto on Lincoln," which I'd like everyone to sit with for a second. Other readers wrote in with their own examples, the way readers do, and the name stuck and eventually escaped the state.

The thing worth knowing is what he actually claimed, because it's much more specific than what the phrase carries now. His rule was that the first time you learn a new word or phrase or idea, you will see it again in print within 24 hours. Twenty-four hours. In print. That's a falsifiable prediction with a clock on it, and I have some affection for the man for putting one there. What survives today is a vague and much friendlier version about noticing things more often, which is the sort of softening that happens to any idea that gets passed around for thirty years.

A print column. Not, as it's usually reported, an online comment board. The 1990s were mostly not online. Easy thing to forget.

Your attention filter changed and the world stayed where it was

Zwicky gave the mechanism a year after the coinage, in a 2006 abstract called "Why are we so illuded?", and he attributed it to two processes that were already well established in psychology and that he was borrowing rather than proposing.

The first is selective attention, which he glossed as noticing things that are salient to us and disregarding the rest. The second is confirmation bias, looking for things that support our hypotheses and disregarding potential counterevidence. Together: you're now primed to detect tigers, so you detect the ones that come past you, and you also unconsciously go looking, and every hit gets filed and every miss doesn't. Nobody keeps a tally of the afternoons with no tigers in them. The denominator is missing. Always has been.

His closing line in that abstract is "We're set up to be illuded," which I think is the most generous sentence anybody has written about this, because it puts the fault in the equipment rather than in the person operating it.

The experience is completely real, by the way. Nobody here is saying you imagined the tote bag.

The tote bag was there. You saw nine tigers because there were nine tigers, all nine of which existed, in the ordinary way, on objects that other people could also have looked at.

Two other words get dragged in whenever this comes up, and they're worth separating, because one of them has solid brain-imaging work behind it and the other has been promoted well past its job description without anybody checking its references.

Pareidolia is seeing a specific familiar form, usually a face, in something ambiguous. The word is Greek, roughly "beside the image," and it came into German psychiatry as Pareidolie by way of Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum in the 1860s. The evidence here is genuinely good. Hadjikhani and colleagues showed in 2009 that objects incidentally perceived as faces produce activation in face-specific ventral fusiform cortex at around 165 milliseconds, meaning it happens well before anything you'd call interpretation. Wardle and colleagues confirmed and complicated that in a 2020 paper in Nature Communications: illusory faces start out represented more like real faces than like matched objects, and then within about 250 milliseconds the representation transforms and they settle down into being ordinary objects again. Macaques do it too, according to separate recordings from monkey face cells, which is my favorite fact in the folder. Your face detector is deliberately trigger-happy, because a false alarm costs you nothing and a miss might cost you everything.

What's overreach: that your brain "literally sees a face, the same as a real one." It doesn't, and the 2020 paper is specifically the thing that shows it doesn't. Also overreach is the confident evolutionary story about predator detection, which is plausible and repeated constantly and isn't something a brain scan can test. And if you ever see this explained via your "reticular activating system filtering what you notice," close the tab. That's motivational-poster neuroscience. Not supported, not close to supported, and everywhere.

Apophenia is the broader one, and its history is much heavier than its current usage suggests. The German psychiatrist Klaus Conrad coined Apophänie in 1958, in a book about the onset of schizophrenia, and it named a specific stage in a phase model of psychosis: unmotivated seeing of connections, accompanied by a feeling of abnormal meaningfulness. It described a prodrome, a clinical term for something happening to a very ill person.

The everyday sense, where apophenia means any perception of pattern in noise, came later, largely through researchers like Peter Brugger extending it to pattern-detection in ordinary people. That extension is legitimate work by later scientists. Attributing the broad meaning to Conrad is not, and the internet does it constantly. So when a video tells you that noticing tigers is "apophenia," understand that the word has been carried a long way from the ward it was born in, and that nobody is describing you as unwell.

The evidence is thinner than the confidence around it

Now the part almost nobody includes. I'd feel bad leaving it out.

There's no famous controlled experiment demonstrating the frequency illusion.

There's some adjacent lab work on how people estimate frequency in general, which is a related question and not the same one. The illusion itself was proposed by a linguist in a blog post as an explanation for why usage columnists are wrong, and the two mechanisms he named were already-established literatures he was pointing at rather than findings he produced.

The nearest thing to a real test is a 2022 paper by Marten van der Meulen in the journal Languages, which took recency and frequency claims out of Dutch prescriptive writing from 1900 to 2018 and checked them against dictionaries and corpora. Most of the claims did turn out to be illusory, which supports Zwicky's original argument nicely. It's a study about grammar scolds, though, and tigers get nothing out of it.

What's genuinely solid underneath all this is older and goes by other names: attentional priming, confirmation bias, and the availability heuristic from Tversky and Kahneman in 1973, which is the finding that we estimate how common something is by how easily examples come to mind. Those are load-bearing. The frequency illusion is a good name sitting on top of them. A very good name, honestly.

Which is to say the honest version of this article is a bit less tidy than the version that gets shared, and I'd rather hand you the untidy one.

The tigers on your phone are actually multiplying

And now the twist. A chunk of what's happening to you isn't an illusion in any sense at all.

If you searched your sign, you generated a signal. Search engines log it and so does every social platform you were signed into, ad networks buy against it, and every recommendation system you touch for the next several weeks has been told, in the only language it speaks, that you are a person who is interested in tigers. So it shows you tigers. That's the product working exactly as designed, and advertisers pay real money for precisely that mechanism. Nothing has gone wrong. Somewhere a line item is being invoiced against your curiosity.

So the count genuinely goes up. You are seeing more tigers than you were seeing in June, and no amount of Zwicky fixes that, because what's happening at that end is a supply chain doing its job.

Two different things are stacked on top of each other and they need to be pulled apart before you can think about either. Out in the physical world, on awnings and tote bags and murals, the rate is unchanged and your filter is what moved. Inside your phone, the rate has really and measurably increased, because you told a machine what you wanted and the machine, unlike the universe, was listening.

I'd also gently note that the strong version of this, the one where personalization seals people into ideological bubbles, is a lot shakier than it sounds. Eli Pariser named the filter bubble in 2011 and the phrase escaped immediately, but large studies since, including work where researchers switched off algorithmic feed ranking for consenting users during a US election, have struggled to find the dramatic effects the phrase implies. The narrow claim is the solid one. You engaged with a topic, so you get served the topic, which is boring and probably accounts for a decent share of your tigers.

Somebody is standing by to sell you the answer

There's an industry built on the ten seconds between the ninth tiger and the search bar, and it's a good business, because the person arriving is already curious, already a little unsettled, and already halfway to believing the answer will be personal.

So you'll get a video explaining that the animal is a message, and then a second video explaining that if you are seeing the message you are ready for the next level, and then, eventually, a link.

Ninety-seven dollars. Sometimes a call instead.

I don't think everyone doing this is cynical. Plenty of them believe it. But the shape of the funnel is the same whether they believe it or not, and it's worth recognizing the shape, because it's the same shape as the party guest and the font: somebody gives you a thing to notice, you notice it, and then they charge you for the noticing.

None of this is an argument about the zodiac

A word about scope, because I can feel where this goes. This kind of article slides very easily into a place it has no business going, so I'd rather put a fence up now.

The Chinese zodiac is a living tradition with a long documented history, tied to a real calendar and a real counting system, still used across a great many households for reasons that have nothing to do with anything on this page. It rests on a way of numbering things that predates the animals by a thousand years, and it isn't on trial here.

What's being explained here is a fact about human attention. It applies identically to fonts, to a car model, to a word you learned on Tuesday, and to a tiger. It would apply if the zodiac were literally true in every particular. Perception works the way perception works regardless of what's being perceived, and anybody using cognitive psychology as a crowbar to pry apart somebody else's tradition is doing something other than psychology.

What the tigers are actually telling you

The useful move, if you want one, is to change the question. Stop asking what the tiger wants and work out the date.

You can usually get within a week of it. There was a dinner where somebody brought it up, or a coworker with her phone out at lunch, or a calendar hanging at the dentist's office in January with a very handsome animal on it. Something put the word in front of you, and after that your equipment did the rest, unprompted, at no charge, the way it did with the awning.

Then the other half. It's the more interesting one and it takes longer.

People go looking at particular times. Somebody with a birthday coming, or a job winding down, or a long stretch of turning over what sort of person she actually is, isn't a person picking up a zodiac chart on a Tuesday for no reason at all. That's a state you were already in when the tigers started. The tigers didn't put you there.

So write the date down.

Then go and stand under the mural.

Because whatever else that mural was doing all those years, it was doing it in November too, and the only genuinely new fact in this entire business is the week you started counting, which is a fact about you rather than a message from anywhere.
