The Kraken: From a Norwegian Bishop's Island-Sized Monster to the Squid Nobody Photographed Until 2004

Pontoppidan's mile-and-a-half monster, Linnaeus's embarrassing entry, and how big the giant and colossal squid actually get.

You can't see the whale.

I mean the one hanging in the big hall at a natural history museum, the ninety-something-foot one, strung up over everybody's heads on cables nobody wants to think about. It's right there. It's the least hidden object in the building. And you can't see it.

From the doorway you get a shape. A long grey curve going away from you, which your eye files under "ceiling," because a curve that big stops reading as an animal and starts reading as architecture. Then you walk under it, and it isn't a whale there either, it's a low grey sky with a seam down the middle. You get about eleven feet of it at a time. Which is a fantastic amount of whale and also nothing.

So you back up. Then you back up more. Then you're standing in the doorway again and you've got the shape you started with.

At some point you hold up your phone, because you're a person, and the picture comes back looking like a bath toy. Not a small whale. A toy, with the shine wrong. You put a kid in the shot for scale and now you have a photo of a kid. You get low and shoot upward and the whale becomes a stripe. You do this six or seven times with the growing suspicion that the machine is not the problem here, and eventually you put the phone away and tip your head back and just look, which is when you notice that your mouth has been open a while, and that your neck has entered a phase of its life it did not consent to, and that you're catching your own reflection in a fossil case looking like a woman awaiting a diagnosis.

(There's always a bench in that hall. Nobody is ever on it. I've decided this is because sitting puts the whale at a worse angle, though it may also be that museum benches are designed by people who hate the human back.)

You will never once have the whole whale. You'll have a stripe, a sky, a shape in a doorway, a bad photo, and a number on a placard, and then your brain will do a fast, confident, entirely unearned bit of arithmetic and hand you a whale. That whale is a construction. Nobody signed off on it. It got assembled from parts by an organ that evolved to judge whether a thing eight feet away is going to be a problem. That organ has never once been asked to hold ninety feet.

We're extremely bad at big. Structurally, embarrassingly bad, in a way that doesn't improve with education or effort.

Which brings me to the ocean, and to an animal that nobody, in the entire run of human beings looking at the sea, managed to see whole and alive until September of 2004.

A word that started out meaning a bad tree

The name is Norwegian. Kraken is the definite form of krake, and krake did not originally mean anything glamorous. It comes off an Old Norse root, kraki, tied up with krókr, meaning hook. The everyday sense runs toward a stunted, twisted thing. A misshapen tree. A pole with a bent bit at the end. Something that grew wrong.

Which is a much better name than the monster ever got credit for. A dead tree with crooked branches sticking up out of the water is exactly what a large cephalopod's arms look like when they break the surface. They were describing a silhouette.

Further back, and this is where it gets murkier, there's the hafgufa, from the Old Norse for something like "sea-steam." It turns up in the Konungs skuggsjá, the Norwegian "King's Mirror," written around the middle of the 1200s, and again in Örvar-Odds saga, and it's enormous, and it gets mistaken for land, and it feeds by belching up something that attracts fish and then holding its mouth open like a fjord until dinner swims in.

Later Scandinavian naturalists took one look at that and filed it as an early kraken. More recent work argues, persuasively, that what's being described is whales trap-feeding, which is a real behaviour that real whales really do and which looks, from a boat, insane. So I'd call the lineage unsettled rather than pretend it runs clean from a 13th-century Norwegian manuscript to a squid. That connection got made later, by people who wanted the story continuous, and it may well have been whales the whole way down.

A bishop measures a monster in miles

Erik Pontoppidan was the Bishop of Bergen, and in 1752 and 1753 he published a two-volume natural history of Norway in Copenhagen. It came out in English in 1755. He was not a crank on a pier. He was a senior churchman writing a work of reference. In it he argued for the sea serpent, the mermaid, and the kraken, which he took to be the largest animal in the world and a settled matter of local zoology.

His description is the one everything else descends from. The creature's back, he wrote, "seems to be in appearance about an English mile and a half in circumference." And then came the single most charming clause in the history of monster reporting. "Some say more, but I choose the least for greater certainty."

He's being conservative. That's a careful man, showing his work, arriving at a mile and a half.

That back, surfacing, looks like a scatter of small islands with something floating and waving around them like seaweed. Fishermen went out over it on purpose, because the fishing above a kraken was reportedly tremendous, and the smart ones watched the depth under the boat and left when it started coming up. The arms he describes as horns rising as high and as thick as the masts of a middling ship.

The real danger, in his telling, is the dive. The thing goes down and takes an enormous volume of water with it and the whirlpool finishes whatever was floating nearby, which he compares to the Moskstraumen, a genuine and genuinely terrifying tidal maelstrom off the Lofoten Islands that was already famous.

Gulp.

What he's built there is an island that turns out to be a mouth, with the good fishing and the drowning issuing from the same fact about the animal, which is an elegant piece of folk reasoning and also entirely wrong.

The time it got a scientific name, sort of

Carl Linnaeus published the first edition of Systema Naturae in 1735, and the story goes that he put the kraken in it under the name Microcosmus marinus, classed with the cephalopods, then thought better of it, so that by the tenth edition in 1758 the monster was gone.

That's the version you'll find everywhere. I want to be straight about how much of it survives a hard look.

The bones of it hold. Linnaeus really did use the genus name Microcosmus, defined roughly as a body covered over with assorted other stuff, which is a description that could cover a barnacled hull, a sea squirt, or a monster, depending on what you brought to it. The early editions really did carry a section called Paradoxa, running from 1735 to 1748, where he parked animals he'd heard about and doubted: the hydra, the unicorn, that kind of guest list. Its purpose was deflationary. He collected the reported marvels in order to say in print that most of them weren't going to hold up.

What wobbles is the tidy part. Whether the word "kraken" appears attached to that entry the way it's usually quoted is less well established than the retellings suggest. At least one careful account flags it as unconfirmed. His Fauna Suecica of 1746 gets cited constantly for a line calling the kraken a singular monster of the Norwegian seas, and that citation is repeated far more often than it's checked.

So: the monster was in the book, and then it was not in the book, and the gap between those two facts is the eighteenth century deciding what it was willing to sign its name to. The exact wording is contested, and anyone who tells you otherwise is quoting a website that was quoting a website.

The poem that got the sleeping part right

Alfred Tennyson published "The Kraken" in Poems, Chiefly Lyrical in 1830, when he was twenty. It's fifteen lines, which makes it a sonnet in the way a hexagonal room is a square. The rhyme scheme is a Petrarchan arrangement that has clearly been out drinking.

His kraken is asleep. That's the move, and it's the reason the poem outlived the rest of the volume. He isn't attacking anything and nobody harpoons him. He's lying far, far beneath in the abysmal sea, in what he calls his ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep, with huge sponges of millennial growth above him and unnumbered polypi feeding in the dark. It rises exactly once, at the end of the world, to be seen and then to die.

Everything before Tennyson had the kraken doing something to us. He put it somewhere unreachable, doing nothing, for an amount of time nobody can hold in their head, and made the horror be the not-yet.

Which turned out to be the more accurate guess, though he had no business being right and wasn't trying to be.

The Alecton loses its monster

November 30, 1861. The French corvette Alecton, sailing between Madeira and Tenerife, comes across an enormous squid at the surface.

The crew do what crews do. They shoot at it, they harpoon it, and eventually they get a rope around the narrow part near the tail and try to bring it aboard. The body tears under its own weight. Most of it goes back into the water and what's left on deck is a piece of the tail end weighing somewhere in the neighbourhood of fifteen to twenty kilos, depending which account you read, which is the sort of discrepancy you get when the source is a commanding officer writing up an incident nobody's going to believe.

He filed a report with the French consul and the matter reached the Académie des Sciences in Paris, and the reception was chilly. The naturalist Arthur Mangin is generally recorded as having pushed back hard, on the reasonable-sounding grounds that a sensible person shouldn't be admitting sea monsters into the literature.

Reasonable-sounding, and wrong. The animal had already been sorted out on a beach.

In 1853 a large cephalopod washed up in Denmark, and the Danish naturalist Japetus Steenstrup got hold of the beak, and off that beak he formally described Architeuthis dux in 1857. Four years before the Alecton. So the giant squid was in the scientific record by the time the Academy sat down to be sceptical about it, which is a fairly normal amount of lag for a field that was, to be fair to them, being handed a lot of nonsense that decade.

Two animals, and everybody keeps mashing them into one

There are two of them. They're not close relatives in any useful sense. And the popular kraken has been gluing them together for a century without telling anyone.

The giant squid, Architeuthis dux. This is the long one. Take the specimens actually measured by people with rulers, rather than estimated by people with adjectives. The mantle, meaning the body part that isn't arms, isn't known to exceed about 2.25 metres. Total length in the biggest confirmed females, measured after death with the tentacles laid out, runs to around twelve or thirteen metres. Reports of twenty metres and up circulate constantly and don't survive checking. The two long feeding tentacles are elastic, and a dead one can be pulled to whatever length the person holding it would prefer.

The colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni. This is the heavy one, and it lives in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. It's shorter, at an estimated six or seven metres, and considerably more substantial, at up to roughly half a tonne, which makes it the heaviest invertebrate on the planet. It has hooks on its arms. Swivelling ones.

Nope.

The largest one ever landed came up on a New Zealand longliner in the Ross Sea in 2007 and weighed close to half a tonne at about 4.2 metres. And the species was first identified in 1925, not from a specimen and not from a sighting, but from two arms on a table that had come out of a sperm whale's stomach.

What the sperm whales have been telling us, and how badly we read it

The circular scars on their heads and backs are real, they're common, and they're left by squid sucker rings during something the whale mostly wins. That's the best long-running evidence we have that large-scale fighting happens down there where nobody's watching.

Then somebody had the idea of measuring the scars.

The arithmetic is easy: sucker of known size sits on arm of known proportion, so a scar this wide implies an animal that long, and the answer that kept coming out was a hundred feet or more. That number is in every popular account written between roughly the 1930s and last Tuesday.

It doesn't work. A whale that got hold of a squid young carries the mark for decades while the whale itself keeps growing, and the scar tissue stretches right along with it. So what you're measuring is partly the squid and substantially the whale's adolescence. Sucker diameter doesn't scale to body length in a straight line anyway.

Ugh.

So the biggest kraken we ever had was a stretch mark.

September 30, 2004, at nine hundred metres

Here is what it took.

Tsunemi Kubodera and Kyoichi Mori went out over deep water off the Ogasawara Islands, roughly a thousand kilometres south of Tokyo, in an area where sperm whales feed, on the theory that if the whales are eating them down there, that's where the squid are. They put down a baited line with a camera on it and left it at about 900 metres.

A giant squid came up on the bait and stayed for something like four hours while the rig fired more than five hundred frames. Then it tore itself loose and left a tentacle behind, five and a half metres of it, confirmed by DNA as Architeuthis. The whole animal was estimated at around eight metres.

Those were the first photographs of a live giant squid in its own habitat.

Ever.

The date is worth sitting with. We had been to the moon and back, and we had colour photographs of the surface of Mars, before anybody got a picture of a living animal that a Norwegian fisherman could have sketched for you in 1750.

In July 2012, Kubodera went down in a submersible with Edith Widder and Steve O'Shea, working with NHK and the Discovery Channel, and they filmed one in its habitat, reported at around 630 metres, for something like twenty-three minutes. Smaller animal, roughly three metres. Also, finally, moving.

And in March 2025, an expedition on the Falkor (too) put a remotely operated vehicle down to 600 metres near the South Sandwich Islands and got the first confirmed footage of a live colossal squid where it lives. A juvenile. Thirty centimetres long, and see-through. One hundred years, almost to the season, after the species was named off two arms in a whale.

How the legend scores when you finally put a tape on it

Pontoppidan said a mile and a half around.

So.

The real answer is a maximum of about thirteen metres including two stretchy tentacles, or else a half-tonne animal from the Southern Ocean that would fit comfortably in a decent hallway, which means the honest verdict on the island-sized kraken is that it never existed and that nothing in the sea has ever come anywhere near it.

But the individual claims score better than the total, which is the part people skip.

Arms as thick as a ship's mast: no, though a large Architeuthis tentacle is comfortably longer than a small boat, and the Alecton's crew got a rope on one and lost. Mistaken for an island: no. Sinking a ship: no, and there's no verified case of anything like it. Dragging down a whale: no, it's the other way around, and the scars are the receipt. An enormous unrecorded animal living far below where anyone can go, so far outside routine observation that responsible scientists declined to admit it: yes. Emphatically, embarrassingly yes, for a century after it had a Latin name.

Which is the strange shape of this one, compared to every other cryptid. Nobody here was working from nothing. There was a real animal, and people kept getting pieces of it.

What the kraken is for

Nobody stands under the whale and thinks about the unknown. The unknown is a duller idea than this one. What the kraken carries, in the symbolic sense, is scale you can't survey: the thing that's present, and near, and too large to be assembled by a person standing next to it.

That's why it sleeps. Tennyson got there in 1830 on pure nerve, and the ocean spent two centuries agreeing with him: the animal is down there, it's been down there the whole time, and it doesn't know about us. Our entire file on it, right up until 2004, was a tentacle on a deck, a mark on a whale, and a shape somebody saw once through the rain.

As an omen, it's honest in a way most omens aren't, because it never predicted anything. It only ever meant there is more water under you than you have accounted for, which no amount of research vessels has made less true.

And as folklore, it's the rare case where the tidying-up went the right direction. Usually the science arrives and takes the monster away. Here it handed back an animal with swivelling hooks on its arms and an eye the size of a dinner plate, living under a mile of water, and the only thing it took off the table was the acreage.

So the bishop was wrong about the mile and a half and right about everything that mattered, and I don't think he'd have minded the correction much. He'd have taken his conservative number and shaved it again. Some say more, but I choose the least for greater certainty.

I keep coming back to those thirty centimetres of transparent squid in March of 2025, though. A hundred years of knowing the animal existed, from two arms in a stomach, and then a camera at 600 metres and there it is, tiny, lit up, going about its business, and the honest response is not fear at all. It's the neck-ache in the museum hall, the phone going back in the pocket, and the small hot embarrassment of having spent your whole life confidently describing a thing you had only ever seen eleven feet of at a time.
