Animals: The One Fear That Shows Up in the Lab, and the Animal Nobody Can Agree About

What the snake studies found, why detection isn't fear, and how one animal became healer, rain-maker and liar in cultures that never met.

There's a dark curved thing lying in the long grass beside the house, and your arm is already up.

Not up in any useful way. Up the way an arm goes when somebody elbows you in a crowd. The bag you were carrying is now on the ground, one foot has travelled backward without consulting you, and you have made a small noise you'd rather not describe.

It's the hose.

Obviously.

It has been the hose since March. You put it there. You are, in the sense that matters legally, the person responsible for the hose.

And the part that stings isn't the noise, because nobody heard it. It's that this is going to happen again in about ten days, in the same grass, with the same hose, and your arm will go up at exactly the same speed, because whichever part of you is handling this doesn't read the notes you leave it.

It's picky, too, which is the bit worth noticing. A rolled towel on the same grass does nothing at all, and neither does a coiled extension cord, which is arguably more snake-shaped and gets you nothing. A belt dropped on a dark floor gets you a little, maybe a quarter of the way. But a stick of roughly the right thickness, lying at roughly the right angle, with a bend in it, will get you the whole performance, the arm and the foot and the noise, and then you'll stand there being annoyed at a stick.

At a stick.

So it isn't curves. Something in there is working off a shortlist.

People have measured this in a lab, and they did it using flowers.

The snake in the flowerbed, on a touchscreen

In 2008, Vanessa LoBue and Judy DeLoache published a study in Psychological Science with the best title anyone has managed in the field, "Detecting the Snake in the Grass." The setup is insultingly simple. You put nine photographs on a touchscreen in a grid. Eight of them are the same thing and one is different, and the job is to touch the odd one out as fast as possible. Speed, that's all.

Sometimes the target is a snake sitting in eight flowers. Sometimes it's a flower sitting in eight snakes.

Adults found the snake faster, and so did the three-year-olds. It held up when they swapped the flowers for caterpillars and frogs, which is the control that actually matters, because a caterpillar is long and a frog is a small mottled animal that sits in the grass, and if the effect were really about shape or greenness it should have washed out there. It didn't.

Now the part that gets left out of every repost, and it comes from LoBue herself.

The children who were frightened of snakes were not faster than the children who weren't. Not at all.

Sit with that one for a second, because it takes the whole finding somewhere other than where people assume it goes. If the speed came from fear, the frightened kids should have been quicker. They weren't. Whatever's doing the work runs upstream of being scared, and it runs the same in a child who thinks snakes are wonderful.

LoBue and Karen Adolph went back over the infant literature in 2019 and made the case in full. Babies look at snakes longer, and their pupils get bigger for snakes and spiders than for matched pictures of flowers and fish, which is arousal, and arousal is not the same animal as fright. Seven-month-olds shown snake footage alongside a frightened voice paid closer attention and showed no fear of their own. Nobody has produced a baby who is afraid of a snake. What keeps turning up instead is a baby who won't stop looking at one.

Different thing entirely.

The finding is real and it's a great deal narrower than its reputation. You're fast. Fast, and no further.

Conditioning that refuses to wash out

The other half of the lab evidence is older and comes at the thing from the opposite end, and it was pulled together by Arne Öhman and Susan Mineka in a 2001 paper in Psychological Review called "Fears, Phobias, and Preparedness." It's about as cited as anything in the area. What it argues for is a fear module: a system switched on preferentially by a short list of evolutionarily old things, running automatically, taking instructions badly, sitting on amygdala circuitry.

The underlying experiments run like this. Show somebody a picture, give them a mild shock, and measure the sweat on their skin. Do it enough times and the picture alone produces the sweat. Then stop the shocks, keep showing the picture, and count how long the response takes to fade.

Nothing fancy.

With pictures of houses, or faces, or mushrooms, it fades quickly, and with snakes and spiders it hangs around for considerably longer. The comparison people usually cite is the one against modern dangers, pointed guns and frayed electrical wiring and syringes, things fully capable of hurting you. Conditioned responses to those extinguish more readily than conditioned responses to snakes.

Which is backwards.

That's a strange result and it has never stopped being strange, given that the gun is by a wide margin the more likely of the two to be the thing that eventually kills you, while the snake is the one your skin refuses to let go of.

One further finding gets skipped. Conditioning to snakes has been reported after masked presentation, meaning the picture went past too fast for the person to report seeing it, and the skin learned anyway. That result has had a rough decade in replication. Note attached, then, rather than headline.

A cell in the macaque pulvinar that likes snakes

In 2013 a group led by Quan Van Le published in PNAS the most eye-catching result in the field. They recorded from individual neurons in the pulvinar of macaque monkeys that had been raised in a lab and had never in their lives encountered a snake. The pulvinar sits in the thalamus. It's long been suspected of running a fast, coarse visual route that gets a first look before the cortex does.

They found cells that responded to pictures of snakes faster and harder than to pictures of monkey faces, monkey hands, or geometric shapes. Including angry monkey faces, which in the life of a macaque is not a trivial category to lose to. Which is saying something.

What that buys you is a physical address for a bias that had until then been an inference drawn from reaction times, which is not nothing.

What it doesn't buy you is the evolutionary story the paper reaches for at the end, and the criticism on that point was immediate and fair. The neuroscientist Luiz Pessoa made the obvious objection, which is that you can't establish a selection pressure across the primate order by recording from one species in one room. He's right. A follow-up out of the same laboratory found the response to snakes and to macaque faces closer in strength than the first paper reported, which the authors put down to method. It's a small number of animals in one genus at one recording site. The cells are real enough. The deep history hung on them is a hypothesis borrowing the confidence of the measurement underneath it.

The monkeys who had to be taught

And now the counter-case, which is strong, and which comes from inside the preparedness camp rather than from its critics.

Lab-reared rhesus monkeys are not afraid of snakes. They have to learn it, and they learn it by watching another monkey be afraid.

Mineka and Michael Cook demonstrated this repeatedly through the 1980s. A monkey raised in a laboratory will handle a snake, or just ignore it. No drama. Show that same monkey a videotape of another monkey reacting with terror to a toy snake, though, and the observer picks the fear up in minutes, holds onto it through months of follow-up testing, and does it having never once been bitten, startled, or given any reason of its own to think a snake is a problem. Then Cook and Mineka ran the version that made the point properly, editing the tapes so the model monkey appeared to be terrified of artificial flowers, or of a toy rabbit, and perfectly calm about a snake.

The observers did not learn to fear flowers, and could not be taught it. The tape was identical, the model's face and body were identical, and the lesson simply refused to attach to a flower.

So the honest shape of the evidence is that the fear is learned and the learning is loaded. The dice are weighted, and somebody still has to throw them.

There's newer work. In 2020, Camilla Luck, Rachel Patterson and Ottmar Lipp published in Psychophysiology a within-participant study conditioning fear to guns, snakes and spiders together, then simply telling people the shocks had stopped. All three went away. Told plainly, in words, the supposedly cognition-proof module took the instruction and shut off. Off it went.

None of this makes the detection bias disappear. It's one of the more replicated things in the area. What it does is strip the bias down to what it can actually support, which is a fast visual system that flags a certain configuration of contour and posture and gets your attention onto it before you've decided anything, in a body that has no opinion about what the animal is for.

The folklore version, the one in a thousand articles, is that we're born afraid of snakes and that's why every culture treats them as evil. The first half is overstated. The second half is just false, and you can check it yourself in an afternoon.

So.

The record that should agree, and doesn't

If a species came pre-tuned to notice one animal above all others, the symbolic record ought to show it. You'd expect a monotonous global consensus, the same verdict everywhere, the way spiders get a fairly consistent press.

The snake is the most morally unstable animal in the entire record. It isn't close.

Not ambiguous, which would be a normal thing for an animal to be. Split, into readings that flatly contradict each other, held with total conviction, in places that had no contact with each other and no opportunity to argue about it.

Ngalyod, Yingarna and the Wagyl

Start in Australia.

"Rainbow Serpent" is an English phrase. The anthropologist Alfred Radcliffe-Brown proposed it in 1926 as an umbrella for a figure he was finding across many Aboriginal Australian groups, and it's been doing umbrella work ever since. Which is worth saying before anything else, because the traditions underneath it are separate, and they belong to separate peoples with their own languages, their own Country and their own law.

In western Arnhem Land, Kunwinjku people know Ngalyod, and Yingarna, who is the original mother. Among Noongar people in the southwest of Western Australia the Wagyl travelled and made the rivers and the wetlands along the Swan, and the Wagyl is not a story that ended. It's an ongoing relationship with specific water in a specific place, and it has been argued in Australian courts within living memory. It's current.

The consistent business of these serpents is water, and they live in the deep permanent waterholes, and they bring the wet season, and the shape of the land is what it is because they moved through it. On a continent where the difference between a waterhole that holds through the dry and one that doesn't is the difference between a country you can live in and one you can't, the being that owns the deep water is not a minor figure.

And they're dangerous. This is the part that gets sanded off in the tourist version. Ngalyod swallows people who break the law, or who make noise at the wrong water. The serpent is creator and enforcer at once, and neither half cancels the other. Both, always.

Paul Taçon and colleagues published work in 1996 on Arnhem Land rock art proposing that Rainbow Serpent figures appear in the Yam style, which stylistic sequences place somewhere around four to six thousand years old, and that their arrival lines up with the post-glacial sea level rise that drowned a great deal of northern Australia and turned coastal country into estuary and floodplain, which is a dating that is relative and stylistic rather than absolute and so worth holding loosely, in a way that the paintings on the rock and the living traditions attached to them are not.

The Naga, in the water and at the door

Across South and Southeast Asia the serpent runs a different job and gets a similarly high rank.

The Sanskrit nāga covers serpent beings who live in water and underground, who hold the treasure, and whose responsibility is the springs, the rivers, and whether the rain arrives. They belong to Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, and in each of them they are powerful, touchy, and worth staying on good terms with. In the churning of the ocean, the serpent Vasuki is the rope. Vishnu rests on Shesha, whose coils are what there is before there's anything else. At Naga Panchami, during Shravana, people still make offerings at snake images and at anthills and to living snakes. Milk in a dish, at the mouth of an anthill.

In Buddhism the naga Mucalinda comes up out of the ground during the storm after the Buddha's awakening, wraps him seven times and holds his hood open over him for seven days as a roof. As a roof. That image is carved all over mainland Southeast Asia, and in Khmer and Thai sculpture it's a standard form.

There's a story in the monastic code about a naga who took human shape to be ordained and was found out while sleeping. The ruling was that only humans may ordain. But the term stuck to the candidate, and in Thailand and Laos a man preparing for ordination is still called a nak, and he's still asked, in the formal questioning, whether he is a human being.

The Khmer founding legend has the Brahmin Kaundinya arriving by sea and marrying Soma, daughter of the naga king, whose father drank down the water to make land for their descendants, and Cambodians describe themselves as children of the naga. Walk up to Angkor Wat and the balustrade under your hand is a naga, held out along the causeway like a rope of stone. You hold it.

And on the Mekong near Nong Khai every year at the end of the rains retreat, on the night of Wan Ok Phansa, reddish lights rise off the river in front of large crowds and are understood locally as the breath of the Phaya Nak welcoming the Buddha back. People book hotels a year out for it, there are food stalls, and it's on the calendar the way a fair is.

The staff with one snake on it

Go west and the healer version turns up with an institution attached.

Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, carries a staff with a single serpent wound around it. Sick people travelled to his sanctuary at Epidaurus and slept in the abaton hoping for a dream that told them what to do. Non-venomous snakes were kept there and permitted to move around the sleepers. When the cult spread to a new city, you founded the new sanctuary by transporting one of the sacred serpents to it. The snake was the franchise, and you couldn't open a branch without one.

Why a snake for the healer, in a country full of vipers? Same answer as everywhere else. It sheds. An animal that walks out of its own skin twice a year and comes out glossy is doing, in front of you, the thing every sick person in the abaton wants. In public.

That reading runs deep and it runs early. In the eleventh tablet of Gilgamesh, the hero finally gets hold of the plant that makes an old man young, puts it down while he bathes, and a snake takes it and sheds its skin going away. The oldest surviving version of the snake in a story we have is the snake as the one who kept immortality, and it's told as a robbery.

The tail-eating circle belongs to Egypt before it belongs to anyone. The earliest known one is on a gilded shrine in Tutankhamun's tomb, in a funerary text now called the Enigmatic Book of the Netherworld. Two serpents hold their tails and encircle the head and feet of a figure uniting Ra and Osiris, marking the beginning and the end of time. The Greek word ouroboros got attached centuries later, by people who inherited the picture without the theology that made it.

The serpent in Genesis, and what it actually says

Then there's the reading most English-speaking readers meet first, and it's worth reading closely rather than from memory.

Genesis 3 opens by calling the serpent arum, usually translated crafty or shrewd, in a sentence that lands immediately after the previous chapter has described the man and the woman as arummim, naked. The pun is doing work and it survives no translation at all. Not one.

What the text does not say is anything about Satan. There's no devil in that chapter, no fallen angel, no possession, and no explanation whatsoever of where the animal came from or what it thought it was doing. It talks, it's shrewd, and it gets cursed to go on its belly. The identification with Satan arrives centuries later in other books, in the Wisdom of Solomon and then explicitly in Revelation, where "that ancient serpent" gets named, and by the time the story reaches a European reader in the medieval period the whole apparatus is welded on and the animal has become the enemy. Centuries of welding.

Egypt, meanwhile, ran both readings at once and never seems to have found it awkward. The cobra on the pharaoh's forehead is Wadjet, the uraeus, spitting fire at the ruler's enemies and protecting the crown. Meanwhile Apep waits every night in the underworld to swallow the sun, and has to be fought off before dawn, every single night, forever. Guardian on the forehead and chaos in the dark, in the same religion, in the same century, without anybody there apparently feeling the need to reconcile the two of them.

Nobody minded.

The door this opens

Every animal article here runs the same procedure. Establish what the creature does for a living, then go and find out who was standing next to it.

The Chinese zodiac Snake is the clearest short case, because in that system the snake is the little dragon and the reading is largely favourable, which is a poor fit for anyone hoping the world agrees about snakes. The Dog and the Rat are worth reading against each other for related reasons, since one of those reputations was built across many thousands of years of shared housing and the other was built beside a grain store, and the second of those animals has a body of cognition research behind it that repays an hour of anyone's time.

The folklore side of the site collects the creatures that were never zoological to begin with, including a sea serpent that turned out to have a real animal underneath it and a fox that got made into a bureaucracy. The omens material handles the other end, which is what people do when a specific animal turns up on a specific day.

Same treatment each time.

Because the record on the snake is as clean a natural experiment as this subject offers. The eye does the same thing in Arnhem Land and in Attica and in a flowerbed on a touchscreen in a psychology building in Virginia, at the same speed, in a three-year-old who loves snakes and one who won't go near them, and then the people standing over that reflex write down healer, or ancestor, or rain, or liar, depending entirely on which water they needed, which animal was actually in the grass near them, and what they already believed about the world before the snake showed up in it.
