Cold takes your body apart in a specific order, and the order is not the one you'd pick.
The hands go first. Which feels almost polite, like the cold is starting with the least important thing. It isn't. Your hands are where your competence lives. You can be a grown adult with a mortgage and opinions about olive oil, and you will stand at your own front door in February unable to work your own key, and then hold it in your fist like a toddler with a crayon, and then drop it, and then crouch on a public sidewalk and paw at it, twice, in front of a neighbor.
Then the shivering starts, which is not a shiver. A shiver is a small decorative thing that happens in a movie when somebody stands outside a hospital in the rain, whereas this is your whole torso going off like a paint mixer and your jaw doing something you did not authorize. Turns out a chattering jaw isn't a sound effect. It's a machine. And you're in it.
And somewhere in there your judgment leaves without telling you.
Hypothermia doesn't feel like an emergency from the inside. Cold enough and people take their clothes off, which is documented and has a name, paradoxical undressing. Colder still and they wedge themselves into enclosed spaces, which also has a name, terminal burrowing. Neither is a decision made badly. That's what a body does once the part of you that decides has gone offline and the lights out front are still on.
Exhaustion runs the same con with different props. I have watched myself, tired past the point of usefulness, become the most confident person in my apartment about a matter I had no information about whatsoever. The confidence isn't a bug in the tiredness. It's the main feature. Nothing chimes to tell you your narrator is currently unreliable, please hold.
Now stack thin air on top of it.
Above about eight thousand feet your blood starts getting less oxygen than it wants, and by nineteen thousand you're in country where the body doesn't adapt so much as slowly lose. People up there have walked past their own tents, and people up there have held long conversations with a companion who was, in the strictest sense, several hundred miles away.
So the honest place to start with the yeti isn't a monastery or a museum. Almost every famous Western sighting was made by somebody cold, exhausted and short of air, and every one of them felt certain.
Including, and I want to be fair here, the ones I'd have believed.
The mountain had a name for it long before anybody sold a ticket
"Yeti" is not a word Western explorers invented, and it isn't a joke word. It comes from the Tibetan g.ya' dred. That's g.ya', a rocky place, plus dred, bear. Rock bear. The final syllable drifting from dred to teh to ti is pronunciation, not mystery.
The related terms run the same way. Meh-teh, from mi dred, is man plus bear, and dzu-teh, cattle bear, means the Himalayan brown bear, which is a real animal with a real Latin name, Ursus arctos isabellinus, while chemo and dremo both attach to the Tibetan blue bear.
Look at what's in almost all of that. Bear. It's bear. The vocabulary was telling anybody who asked, in plain Tibetan, for a very long time.
But this isn't only a taxonomy problem, and here's where I'd ask you to put the flashlight down. The anthropologist H. Siiger, writing in 1978 on Lepcha material from Sikkim, recorded belief predating Buddhism there: a Glacier Being worshipped as a god of the hunt. Followers of Bon held that the blood of the mi rgod had ceremonial use. Tibetan Buddhist tradition absorbed the creature as a tiragyoni, a nonhuman animal capable of following the Dharma. There are traditional accounts of a yeti bringing food and fuel to the meditating hermit Sangwa Dorje and becoming his disciple. A personal sighting reads as an ill omen, the kind that obliges the witness to go and accumulate some merit afterward.
That's a functioning, centuries-old religious idea belonging to specific communities, and it was doing fine right up until a British survey party came through and a newspaper got hold of it.
September 22, 1921, and a newspaper man in Calcutta
Charles Howard-Bury was leading the British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition. On September 22, 1921, his party went up toward the Lhakpa La and found tracks in the snow. His own words, exactly:
"We were able to pick out tracks of hares and foxes, but one that at first looked like a human foot puzzled us considerably."
And a little further on, his explanation, which he offered without anybody forcing him:
"These tracks, which caused so much comment, were probably caused by a large 'loping' grey wolf, which in the soft snow formed double tracks rather like those of a barefooted man."
That's the leader of the expedition saying, in his own book, that it was most likely a wolf whose back paws landed near its front paws in soft snow, and there is no version of this story in which the man standing there thought he'd found a monster.
Down in Darjeeling, Henry Newman of the Calcutta Statesman, who wrote under the pen name "Kim," interviewed the returning porters. What he came back with was "Abominable Snowman." How he got there is genuinely contested, so I'll lay the options out rather than pick the tidiest. One account has him rendering metoh as "filthy" and then upgrading it to "abominable" on his own recognizance, which is not translation but a rewrite with better legs, and another has the word garbled in transmission into "metch," a form Professor David Snellgrove of SOAS ruled impossible in Tibetan in 1956, which makes a telegraph key the suspect. Take your pick.
Newman himself, in a letter to The Times preserved by H.W. Tilman in an appendix to Mount Everest 1938, gave up the whole game in one sentence:
"The whole story seemed such a joyous creation I sent it to one or two newspapers."
A joyous creation. He knew.
One more detail, lost because it's boring. Howard-Bury's book came out in 1922, after Newman's coverage ran, and inside it he refers to "the abominable snow man" and to the thing that "interested the newspapers so much," so his own book isn't independent evidence that anybody on that mountain used the word. He's quoting the press. The press was quoting him. That loop has been going round since before anybody currently arguing about it was born.
The most famous footprint on earth, photographed by a man who said it was melted
On November 9, 1951, by Michael Ward's own dating, Eric Shipton and Ward and the Sherpa Sen Tensing were coming down from the Menlung La when they came across a line of tracks. Shipton took four exposures, two of them long shots of the track line and two of them close-ups of the best-preserved print, one with Ward's ice axe laid beside it for scale.
That ice-axe photograph is the most reproduced piece of yeti evidence anywhere, and you have seen it.
One number about it is wrong everywhere. The print gets given as "thirteen by eighteen inches," and that isn't in any primary source I can find. Shipton, in The Times on December 6, 1951, gave it as around twelve by six. Eighteen is the stride, from Tom Bourdillon's diary. Somebody married the stride to the width. Anyway.
Here's what I find genuinely wild. The melting explanation isn't a skeptic's counterargument bolted on afterward. It's in the photographer's own account, three weeks later:
"The tracks were mostly distorted by melting into oval impressions, slightly longer and a good deal broader than those made by our mountain boots."
Ward, in the Alpine Journal in 1999, ranked the candidates. Top of his list was a local Tibetan walking barefoot with a congenital foot abnormality. Not a wild reach. Ward had personally seen a Nepali man whose big toes turned at right angles, and he put the apparent claw marks at the crevasse crossings down to onychogryphosis, untreated toenails curling over into a ram's horn. And on the barefoot-in-snow objection he had a pilgrim named Man Bahadur, who spent fourteen days barefoot above fifteen thousand feet without frostbite.
His conclusion, which I'd put on a plaque:
"We will never know for certain what man or animal made the footprints in the Menlung basin in 1951, but I think that the above possible explanations are as plausible as any that have been put forward so far."
Then there's the hoax charge, which I have to flag as contested. In the Sunday Times Magazine of December 10, 1989, Peter Gillman and Audrey Salkeld argued Shipton faked the close-up, citing Edmund Hillary, who said it looked fresh while the track-line shots looked thawed and refrozen, and who added that when pressed, Shipton "tended to rather dodge giving too much of a reply."
Ward's rebuttal was not hedged. "This was no hoax and the events occurred exactly and precisely as described." Two men who were there, one saying fake and one saying real. I can't settle it and neither can anybody else.
A hand, a scalp, and a movie star's wife going through customs
Tom Slick was a Texas oil millionaire who heard about a mummified hand kept at the monastery at Pangboche and funded expeditions in 1957, 1958 and 1959 to go get at it. Peter Byrne was his man on the ground, and what follows is, no contest, the best story in the subject.
Byrne got the hand in front of Professor William Charles Osman Hill of the Royal College of Surgeons, who handed him a desiccated human finger in a paper bag. Byrne's accounts of the swap differ, which I'd note rather than smooth over. An earlier version has it covert, while a 2011 version has him openly bargaining, the lamas agreeing to a trade for a hundred pounds plus a replacement, and Byrne wiring the human finger into place and painting it with iodine so it matched.
Then he had to get it out of India. Slick arranged for him to meet James and Gloria Stewart at the Grand Hotel in Calcutta, where Mr. Stewart was on a tiger-hunting holiday. Gloria Stewart put the finger in her lingerie case and carried it through customs into London. Nobody stopped them.
I want that in a film. Not a documentary, a film, with someone unbothered and enormous playing Slick.
In 1960 and 1961 Edmund Hillary ran a follow-up, funded by World Book Encyclopedia to the tune of a hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. He negotiated the loan of the Khumjung monastery's yeti scalp, said locally to be more than three hundred and fifty years old, took it to Chicago in December 1960, and there Marlin Perkins of the Lincoln Park Zoo concluded it could not be scalp tissue at all, because it had been molded from the hide of a serow, a Himalayan goat-antelope. Marcia Burns published the analysis in Genus in 1962. The one good thing to come out of any of this is that the donations Hillary made to that monastery and its school are the origin of the Himalayan Trust.
Samples the anthropologist George Agogino had retained were tested for NBC's Unsolved Mysteries in 1991, and the reported finding was tissue similar to human but not human, which is the most 1991 sentence ever produced. Shortly after the broadcast the hand was stolen from Pangboche and vanished into a private collection. Still gone.
Then in 2008 somebody opened a box at the Hunterian Museum. Inside was a curled, blackened finger fragment, nine centimeters long, labeled as from the Pangboche yeti hand. Byrne, by then eighty-five, confirmed it was his. Dr. Rob Ogden of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland sequenced it, and the BBC broadcast the result on December 27, 2011.
Ogden's summary: "Human was what we were expecting and human is what we got."
Fifty years, a smuggling operation, a Hollywood couple, and a finger from a person. There was enough of this going on that Nepal wrote rules about it, and a US Embassy despatch of November 30, 1959 sets a permit royalty of five thousand rupees and specifies that the yeti may be captured alive but killed only in self-defense.
Reinhold Messner gave it twelve years and came back holding a bear
In July 1986, in eastern Tibet near the headwaters of the Mekong, Reinhold Messner had something large and dark-haired come out of rhododendron scrub about thirty feet ahead of him. It rose onto its hind legs, then ran off on all fours. Local Tibetans told him it was a chemo.
He spent roughly twelve years chasing it, and Yeti: Legende und Wirklichkeit came out in 1998, in English in 2000 as My Quest for the Yeti, with his conclusion being the Himalayan brown bear and the Tibetan blue bear, an animal that stands up and then drops back down, which is exactly the motion that turns a bear into a hominid in a witness account.
Skeptics loved it. Others pointed out, not unreasonably, that Messner's own bears are described walking upright and whistling to each other, which bears do not especially do, so his naturalistic explanation is being carried partway by the very thing it was supposed to replace. Fair hit.
Hold on to one thing for later. There's a stuffed yeti in the Reinhold Messner Mountain Museum.
The 2014 polar bear, which was a chemistry problem
In July 2014, Bryan Sykes of Oxford published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B the first systematic genetic survey of hair attributed to anomalous primates. Thirty samples yielded usable sequence from a 104-base-pair fragment of mitochondrial 12S rRNA. Almost all of it came back as ordinary known mammals.
Two samples, one from Ladakh and one from Bhutan, came back closest to polar bear, and Sykes floated ancient brown-polar hybridization as an explanation. Note what that paper actually argues, because the coverage got it backwards. It argues against an unknown primate. Then the correction arrived, in two stages.
Ceiridwen Edwards and Ross Barnett showed the sequences matched a modern polar bear from Little Diomede Island, Alaska. And the single position separating the two candidate species sat inside a run of six cytosines, exactly where the standard degradation mechanism in old DNA converts C to T. Their reading: the polar bear signal was plausibly damage. The likely animal was the ordinary Himalayan brown bear, the dzu-teh, the word that had been sitting there the whole time. Sykes conceded the wrong reference specimen in February 2015 and declined to concede the conclusion.
Then in March 2015 Eliécer Gutiérrez and Ronald Pine published in ZooKeys and took the legs off it, comparing that fragment across forty-nine brown bears and thirty-two polar bears. Not one single nucleotide in it reliably distinguishes the two species. The fragment cannot do the job it was asked to do, and Sykes never published a reply to that one.
What was actually in the hair, settled in 2017
On November 29, 2017, Charlotte Lindqvist's team published in the same journal, running nine purported yeti specimens against twenty-three reference bears, and the results are not ambiguous. Six were Tibetan brown bear, one was Himalayan brown bear, one was Asian black bear, and one was a dog, and the dog was a tooth from that stuffed yeti in the Messner museum. There it is.
The Ladakh hair, the same material Sykes had read as polar bear, produced a full mitogenome and grouped unambiguously with living Himalayan brown bear. Which closes that loop entirely.
One disclosure I rarely see made. The samples came from the Messner museum and from Icon Films, which funded the research, having made an Animal Planet special the year before. The sequencing looks solid. But you should know who paid.
The genuinely interesting result got no coverage, because it has no monster in it. The team assembled the first complete mitogenomes for the Himalayan brown bear and the Himalayan black bear, and dated the brown bear's divergence to roughly 658,000 years ago, overlapping a glaciation that would have cut the population off. It's one of the earliest-branching lineages in the entire brown bear family, it's critically endangered, and hardly anybody knows it exists.
We spent seventy years and a fortune looking for a thing that wasn't there and walked straight past a rare bear that was.
Is the yeti real, and what the honest answer costs
No. Not as an unknown primate. That part is done, and it's been done for a while.
Every physical item ever surrendered for testing has come back as something already in the textbooks, which is to say serow hide for the scalp, a human finger, brown bear hair and a dog's tooth. The most famous footprint on earth was photographed by a man who told The Times three weeks later that the tracks were distorted by melting. The name was made up by a journalist who admitted in writing that he thought it was a fun story.
That's the verdict. I'm not softening it.
But the yeti as Sherpa and Tibetan communities have held it is a different object entirely, and it doesn't fail this test, because it was never entered into it. A Glacier Being, a hermit's disciple, an omen that obliges the person who saw it to go and do some good afterward: none of that is a claim about zoology and none of it needed a DNA result to be true in the way it was always meant to be true. It predates every Englishman in this article by centuries, which is worth sitting with, given that the Western contribution has been to mistranslate the name, photograph some slush, smuggle a finger through customs in a lingerie case, and then announce that we'd solved it. Ugh.
Which leaves the sightings, and I take those seriously.
I don't think those people were lying. Michael Ward was a serious physician doing serious high-altitude physiology and he never once claimed a monster. Messner is among the greatest climbers who ever lived, and he saw something and then went and found out what it was. Real people on real mountains have seen large brown shapes at distance in bad light, eleven hours into a day, hands gone useless and blood short on the one thing it needs, and a bear that rises onto two legs on snow at that hour will produce a report, and the report will arrive vivid and detailed and delivered with total conviction, because that's the only way any of us ever receives anything from our own body.
So the mountain takes your hands first, and then your judgment, and then it takes your ability to notice that either one is gone, and it leaves your certainty sitting exactly where it was, lit up and warm and entirely sure of itself, which is how a thing you never saw ends up out there walking around, keeping you company.
